How to avoid the dangers of sitting for too long

In our everyday lives, there are many unhealthy habits that we are cautioned to avoid. People tell us not to smoke, eat junk food, and drink alcohol to excess. However, there is one unhealthy practice people partake in every day without knowing. This habit is sitting in a chair for prolonged periods of time.

For many, sitting in a chair is synonymous with their office jobs. Despite hearing that sitting for too long is linked to increased risk of heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, and other problems, some will argue that it is an unavoidable component of their desk jobs. Since so much of our business and economy is dependent on office jobs, what are we supposed to do in light of these disagreeable health facts?

Even if you have an office desk job, you don’t have to stay sitting in the same position for half a day. There are several things you can do to help mitigate the negative effects of prolonged sitting.

First, if your office allows it, you might want to invest in a sit-stand desk which allows you to alternate between sitting and standing while working. Second, don’t take your breaks sitting down. Make sure you are standing and walking while resting from work. Lastly, you should invest in a good, ergonomic foam cushion or foam inserts for your seat cushion.

A good foam cushion improves comfort and reduces pain. It also reduces compression and pressure on your body, which is responsible for many of sitting’s negative effects. You can find high-quality foam seat cushions at The Foam Factory.
